Ever had one of those days? You know, when no matter how hard you try, challenge after challenge seems to arise? Well, for me, the month of February was one of those months. Although February was filled with lots of love (e.g. Valentine’s day, and I celebrated a milestone wedding anniversary), it was also filled with lots of unexpected and hard hitting losses. Family and longtime dear friends passed away from Covid-19. So very sad.

Remember to let those you care about know it. That’s one of the reasons I usually sign off on my emails and videos with, “Who loves you? I do.”

In this Kwanza Jones Chronicles, I have three things for you… a song, a story, and a spirit.

The SONG

February was Black History Month and March is Women’s History Month. Both of these commemorative months remind me of the work done by so many. It’s the individual and collective work that, though often overlooked or not widely known, has positively impacted families, communities, countries, and nations.

As a Black woman, my existence and lived experiences intersect these groups. And, I am proud of the great work done by both groups. In honor of this greatness, I’m sharing my song – We Buildin’ with you.

I hope this anthem of empowerment boosts you and inspires you to continue to make positive change and be of service to others.

The STORY

I often refer to women and women-identifying folks as queens. When I think of a queen, I think of the game of chess. The queen ♛ is the most powerful piece.

In chess, as in life, the action you take and the moves you make matter.

You know I love to create meaningful and motivational content — sometimes it’s music, sometimes it’s video or other media. So, not only do I have a song called Queen Moves Only, I also created a series of short video clips about how to make Queen Moves Only. The tips apply to anyone, regardless of gender.

The SPIRIT

Given the recent memorials and funerals I have attended, I’ve been reflecting on how we are much more than flesh and bones. We are spirit.

Spirit and shared purpose is what connects us. The spirit of joining together with others to grow, be better and do better is what moves me. It gives me hope for a better world.

But hope without work is in vain.

So I marry my hope with action. I marry investing with empowering. That is part of my life’s work: to inspire action, to share energy, to boost humans and humanity.

I am inspired by Biden’s nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. He said, “it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation with a nominee of extraordinary qualifications…”

His comments resonated with me and reminded me of my musical Public Service Announcement: Problem. In the video, I highlighted some of the problems that exist in our nation, but I also spoke about how it’s time to magnify our greatness.

Ketanji repesents what is possible. She has dedicated her life to public service. You don’t have to be in the public service sector or politics to serve.

My parents taught me how to be of service to other people. Here’s a hint. The small things matter.

I encourage you to think about the impact that you’re making. Again, all the small things matter.
